Artemisia afra
Artemisia afra, named after the Greek goddess Artemis, is an aromatic perennial, one of the most popular medicinal herbs originating out of South Africa and a species of the genus Artemisia. arte+guard™ is an oil infusion composed with the whole dried leaf Artemisia afra with expeller pressed canola oil. Artemisia afra is an ecological remedy to combat plant pests by providing components that manage to eliminate or drive away pests from plants. Its whole leaf and essential oil is especially rich in 1,8-cineole, a component with insecticide properties. In addition to 1,8-cineole, Artemisia afra contains more than 20 pesticides such as ascorbic acid, alpha and beta pinene, ruin, camphene, formic acid, etc. Among the fungicide components of Artemisia afra are the following: chlorogenic, salicylic or p-coumaric acids and pinene.
Canola Oil
Canola oil is an edible refined vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of four species of rape plants: Brassica napus, Brassica juncea, Brassica rapa and B. campestris of the family Cruciferae (mustard family). Canola oil is considered safe for human consumption. Scientists believe that canola oil repels insects by altering the outer layer of the leaf surface or by acting as an insect irritant.

Various oils have been used for centuries to control insect and mite pests. Oils remain an important tool to manage certain pest problems (e.g. scales, aphids, mites) on fruit trees, shade trees and woody ornamental plants. Several highly refined oils such as pressed canola oil extend this usefulness to flowers, vegetables and other herbaceous plants. Oils also can control some plant diseases, such as powdery mildew. Oils used to protect plants have been called by many names, but perhaps ‘Horticultural Oils’ best describes them as these are oils used to control pests on plants. Horticultural Oils in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs can be an effective tool in the practice of preventing or suppressing damaging populations of insect pests by application of the comprehensive and coordinated integration of multiple control tactics. In reality, synthetic pesticides-based pest control still predominates U.S. agriculture. However, biologically intensive control technologies are increasingly displacing agrochemical intensive techniques.
